Is this Amazon’s smartphone ? BGR claims that we are looking at an early prototype wrapped in its protective case to conceal its true design.

Here’s the interesting part, it has 6 front facing cameras.Rumours are coining out that Amazon’s new smartphone will be providing real time 3D experience. With all those 6 cameras being used to track your face and give the illusion of a 3D space. BGR sources state that the new Amazon phone includes a total of six cameras.

The main rear camera is thought to feature a resolution of 13 megapixels, and the phone also includes a standard front-facing camera for video chats as well as Amazon’s Mayday customer service feature. Beyond those two units, the device houses an additional four front-facing cameras that work with other sensors to facilitate the software’s 3D effects. And four cameras on the corners are just low powered infrared cameras.

Amazon’s first smartphone is one of at least two handsets the company is currently working on.An entry-level device that will feature lower-end specs and a very competitive retail price. BGR say’s that the device may be released in the upcoming months.Amazon’s first phone will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, and it will also include 2GB of RAM. It will run a heavily customised version of Google’s Android operating system similar to the version that powers Amazon’s tablets. The phone will have a display of 4.7 inches with a 720p resolution

But the bigger question is why would Amazon want to step in to the low margin highly competitive smartphone market ? Amazon has already proved that it can be successful at E-readers, Tablets and even Set-top Boxes. But those will always be secondary to your smartphone(A device you always have with you). Amazon also has an advantage over Apple and Samsung, it can compete on price without subsidies and doesn’t need carrier partnerships. Amazon.com is the world’s leading online retail store and five of its six top selling devices are manufactured by Amazon. And the best part it doesn’t need to be on actual store shelfs to generate sales. The Kindle, Kindle fire and the Fire TV all have one thing in common, they are all basically store fronts for selling books, movies or virtually anything. And for them smartphones are the only screen left for them to own. According to the WSJ amazon is expected to announce the smartphone in June and plans to ship them by September.
